Investigation of the North Brazil Current retroflection and North Equatorial Countercurrent variability

چکیده
[1] Eight years of TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter-derived sea height anomaly and climatological hydrographic data are used to investigate the temporal and spatial variability of the North Brazil Current (NBC) retroflection and the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC). The NBC retroflection exhibits a mean position of 6.6 N± 2.0 , with a strong annual signal and year-to-year variability. The annual cycle of its location follows the meridional migration of the ITCZ and the strength of the wind stress curl over the equatorial Atlantic. A marked shift in the annual mean location of the NBC retroflection is observed in 1998–1999 that appears to be linked to an increase in wind stress curl during this period. The mean latitude of the NECC is estimated to be 6.0 N ± 1.3 , with a semiannual cycle showing maximum northerly locations in February and August. The baroclinic transport of the NECC varies predominantly on an annual cycle with maximum transport of 12 Sv occurring in November.

A note on the validity of the Sverdrup balance in the Atlantic North Equatorial Countercurrent
An ocean general circulation model of the tropical Atlantic Ocean is used to study the vertically integrated vorticity equation for the annual mean flow in the Atlantic North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC). It is found that the nonlinear terms play an important role in the vorticity budget, in the western part of the basin. Sverdrup balance does not hold in the region of the North Brazil Curr...
متن کاملCirculation of the thermocline salinity maximum waters off the Northern Brazil as inferred from in situ measurements and numerical results
High resolution hydrographic observations of temperature and salinity are used to analyse the subsurface circulation along the coast of North Brazil, off the Amazon mouth, between 2 S and 6 N. Observations are presented from four cruises carried out in different periods of the year (March–May 1995, May–June 1999, July–August 2001 and October–November 1997). Numerical model outputs complement th...
متن کاملA curious local surface salinity maximum in the northwestern tropical Atlantic
[1] Sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements from the Aquarius/SAC-D satellite reveal the seasonal development of a local salinity maximum in the northwestern tropical Atlantic in boreal winter to early spring. This seasonal tropical SSS maximum, which is confirmed by comparison to in situ observations, is centered at 8 N, and is up to 0.5 psu saltier than the surrounding water despite its locat...

متن کاملSeasonal variability of the South Equatorial Countercurrent
[1] Using the 1.5-layer long Rossby wave model forced by the seasonal European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellite scatterometer wind, we demonstrate that the seasonal variability of the South Equatorial Countercurrent (SECC) is due to the interplay of two types of forced Rossby waves: the resonantly forced Rossby waves north of 10 S and the locally forced Rossby waves south of 10 S. The resonantly ...
